Leathery Mom Denies Taking 5yo Daughter into Tanning Booth

A New Jersey woman has been charged with felony child endangerment after she allegedly took her five-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, where the child suffered serious burns. Even Snooki, the tanning queen herself, does not approve.

The investigation of Krentcil began after cops were summoned to the elementary school attended by the kindergartener, who was in pain due to what appeared to be a severe sunburn. The subsequent probe determined, cops allege, that Krentcil took her child into a tanning booth at a Nutley parlor a week prior to her April 24 arrest.

State law bars children under the age of 14 from using a tanning facility. Investigators contend that Krentcil brought her daughter into a stand-up tanning booth without the knowledge of parlor employees.

Putting a 5 year old in a tanning bed is horrible for any child but would be especially dangerous for this beautiful little girl. The risk of melanoma is more than 10 times higher for whites than for African Americans. Whites with fair skin, freckles, or red or blond hair have a higher risk of melanoma. Red-haired people have the highest risk. There’s no such thing as a “healthy” tan. The damage to the skin is irreversible. Children are particularly vulnerable. Yet because tanning is thought of as a sign of health, affluence and beauty in our culture, people don’t take the risks seriously.

New Study Further Suggests Tanning is Addictive

Tanorexia, tanorexic, tanning addict? None of these are new terms however, a new study suggests that frequent users of tanning beds exhibited brain activity similar to that observed in people addicted to drugs or alcohol.

A study published in the journal Addiction Biology found that tanning bed user’s brain activity and blood flow to the brain area are altered by tanning bed users in similar ways to drug and alcohol abusers. Scientists filtered out the UV light without telling the subjects and saw far less activity in regions of the brain that are normally associated with experience. The tanners did not feel fulfilled after the sessions without UV light and still desired to go tanning. This indicates that they could tell when they didn’t experience the addictive brain activity and felt as though they did not get their “fix”, much like with drugs.

Tanning comes with many health risks. According to Skin Cancer Foundation, people under 30 who use a tanning bed 10 times a year have eight times the risk for malignant melanoma.
Still longing for that bronze glow? Safe and effective options include self tanning lotion or a spray tan.

Parking Lot Consult

On Friday the office kicked off the holiday weekend by enjoying some Starbucks Frappuccinos and Cake Pops (if you haven’t figured this out yet our office really likes food, especially sweets). After a busy afternoon Dr. Lee and I happened to leave at the same time at around 5pm. Her car pulls ahead of me when I see her notice a patient at the front door. She hops out of the car and after a brief conversation the patient scans the empty parking lot making sure she doesn’t have spectators. She then pulls her blouse aside showing Dr. Lee something on her neck. I smile and wave as I pass Dr. Lee’s parking lot skin consultation. I’m not sure exactly what came of this encounter but I’m sure the patient was thankful that she did not have to wait through the long holiday weekend to get some help.

Dear 16-year-old Me

A great video about those who have been personally touched by Melanoma. Created by The David Cornfield Melanoma Fund. The video speaks for itself.

Melanoma Drug Breakthrough

Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the United States and worldwide. The incidence of melanoma in people under 30 is increasing faster than any other demographic group, soaring by 50% in young women since 1980. By regular skin cancer screenings Melanoma can be detected in its early stages and successfully removed. However, in later stages Melanoma can be deadly and until recently few treatment options were available. The New York Times reports that two new drugs have shown new promise to prolong lives of those with advanced melanoma. While it is not a cure for metastatic melanoma it may add several months to the expected lifespans of patients.

Trials recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine provide evidence that vemurafenib and ipilimumab improve survival rates of advanced melanoma patients by one attacking a specific genetic mutation and the other by unleashing the body’s immune system to fight the disease respectively. The manufactures of the two new drugs are planning trials to use the agents together and see if the combination will improve patient outcomes further.

and the winner is…

Congratulations to Meri who is the winner of our first giveaway! We will be contacting you soon.
